About AquariumMath

Our Mission

AquariumMath exists for one reason: to make fishkeeping accessible to everyone. Whether you are setting up your first betta tank or planning a 75-gallon community build, our free calculators take the guesswork out of aquarium design.

We believe that healthy aquariums start with accurate information. Every fish loss due to overstocking, the wrong heater size, or uncycled water is preventable. Our tools are designed to help new and experienced aquarists make data-driven decisions so their fish thrive.

How Our Calculators Work

Tank Volume Calculator

Uses precise geometric formulas for five tank shapes — rectangle, bowfront, cylinder, hexagon, and corner — converting cubic inches to gallons and liters.

Stocking Calculator

Based on bioload capacity rather than the outdated "one-inch-per-gallon" rule. We factor in adult size, temperament, schooling requirements, and waste output from our 35-species fish database.

Heater & Filter Sizing

Heater calculations use watt-per-gallon ratios adjusted for the temperature differential between your room and target water temperature. Filter sizing is based on gallons-per-hour turnover rates matched to your bioload level.

Substrate & Weight Calculators

Substrate volume is computed from your tank footprint and desired depth, then converted to pounds using density values for each substrate type. The weight calculator accounts for water, glass, and substrate to help you choose the right stand.

Glass Thickness Calculator

Uses a simplified bending-stress formula with appropriate safety factors for glass and acrylic panels, helping DIY builders select the right thickness for their custom aquarium.

Who We Are

We are a small team of fishkeeping enthusiasts and web developers. We have kept everything from nano shrimp tanks to planted community setups. We built the calculators we wished existed when we started the hobby — simple, accurate, and free.
