Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I test my betta tank water?

Test weekly for an established tank. During cycling, test daily. After adding new fish, test every other day for two weeks. Always test if your betta shows signs of stress like clamped fins, lethargy, or color loss.

What is the nitrogen cycle and why does it matter?

The nitrogen cycle converts toxic ammonia (from fish waste) into less harmful nitrate. Beneficial bacteria in your filter break down ammonia into nitrite, then nitrite into nitrate. You remove nitrate through water changes. Without a cycled tank, ammonia builds up and poisons your fish.

Why do I need a liquid test kit instead of strips?

Liquid test kits like the API Master Test Kit are far more accurate than test strips. Strips can give false readings and don't test for ammonia separately. A liquid kit costs more upfront but provides 800+ tests — much cheaper per test.

My ammonia is high but my tank is cycled. What happened?

Common causes: overfeeding, a dead fish or snail decomposing, cleaning your filter with tap water (chlorine kills beneficial bacteria), adding too many fish at once, or a power outage that starved your bacteria. Do a 50% water change with Prime and investigate the cause.
